My First Best Friend

Eleven Lines

I remember you leading me bald-headed around by the hand
showing me all the (even though we
didnt call them that or know what a that
was or know what an anything was really)
rules of childhood
and all the interesting things you'd already discovered
within the silent sprocket edges of dad's brittle home movies
and dancing dancing dancing, unawares
into the shadowy distance of time's eager eraser
as if you were already married with kids in texas and
I had already drowned in all my western seas

I still wear that bow tie on special occasions such as a night at the opera

Never did I grow into that flippy floppy suit

Going away party just before I shipped out to the South Pacific
